What is ENHANCE ABOUT?

ENHANCE is an EU-funded initiative dedicated to protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems through integrated data-driven solutions. It utilises the One Health approach, combining AI-powered analytics, Copernicus satellite observations, and Citizen Science data services to develop innovative coastal management strategies.

The project seeks to tackle the multifaceted challenges affecting environmental, human, and animal health.

Our overarching goal is to equip stakeholders with dynamic tools and actionable insights, thereby supporting policymakers and businesses in developing robust strategies for effective coastal management.

How will ENHANCE strengthen coastal monitoring and governance?

  • Implementing the One Health approach – Establishing a framework that links human, animal, and environmental health to ensure sustainable solutions.
  • Developing the ENHANCE Data Exchange Platform – A secure, real-time data hub integrating Copernicus, EGNSS, in-situ monitoring, and citizen science contributions.
  • Deploying AI-driven tools for monitoring marine ecosystems – AI-powered models will assess environmental pressures, predict eutrophication, and generate dynamic risk maps.
  • Providing a decision-support system for policy and business – Interactive dashboards and visualisations will aid urban planning, fisheries, and aquaculture stakeholders.
  • Fostering stakeholder collaboration through Living Labs – Multi-sector engagement to co-develop and validate innovative strategies for climate resilience.

Project Objectives :

1. One Health Integration: Merge human, animal, and environmental health into a unified strategy for coastal management.

2. Data Exchange Platform: Develop a secure, real-time data-sharing hub that integrates diverse data sources, from Copernicus satellites to citizen science.

3. AI-Powered Toolkit: Equip stakeholders with advanced tools to monitor and assess coastal health, from water quality to biodiversity.

4. Risk Mapping: Utilise AI to visualise environmental pressures and risks, aiding policymakers and businesses in strategic decision-making.

5. Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with stakeholders across the EU to refine our services and ensure their long-term impact.

Coastal case studies

  1. Catalan coast, Urban Beaches & Ebro Delta, Spain

The Challenge: Urbanisation and agricultural activities strain the coastal ecosystems of Barcelona and the Ebro Delta.

Our Response: By analysing urban impacts and integrating citizen science data, we aim to enhance biodiversity monitoring and management.

The Impact: Deeper insights into environmental pressures, improved predictive capabilities, and sustainable coastal management.

  1. Pagasitikos Gulf, Greece

The Challenge: After devastating floods in September 2023, the Gulf faces threats from toxic sediments and pathogens.

Our Response: Monthly sampling campaigns and satellite monitoring help us track ecosystem recovery and water quality.

The Impact: A detailed recovery timeline, informed management strategies, and prevention of future environmental crises.

The Broader impact

ENHANCE aims to revolutionise coastal management by improving our ability to predict and alleviate environmental pressures. Using technology and community engagement, we strive to conserve biodiversity, enhance coastal health, and support stakeholders in creating a sustainable future.
