SPI is a private consulting company created in 1996 as an active centre of national and international networks connected to the research and innovation areas. Since its inception, SPI has become a leading promoter of linkages between national and international public and private organizations, private sector companies, and science and technology institutions. From its onset, SPI has embraced the mission of managing projects that foster innovation and promote international opportunities with an emphasis on: regional, national and international development; knowledge management; research; innovation; and entrepreneurship.
SPI has over 80 full-time staff located in the various offices of the company – including in Portugal (Porto, Lisbon, Coimbra, Azores and Évora), China (Beijing and Macao), Spain (Santiago de Compostela) and USA (Washington D.C. and California). SPI also has established professional and business networks and operations in Brazil and Africa. In addition, SPI has an affiliated office in Belgium (Brussels) through the European Business & Innovation Centre Network (EBN) and is also an associated member of the EBN and has a wide network of contacts with different kinds of R&D and innovation actors across Europe and beyond.
SPI has coordinated and provided expert support on projects based in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Africa. In addition to working with private clients, SPI has conducted projects within these regions of the world in support of clients such as the: European Commission, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and National Governments.
SPI is currently or has led / been partner in over 25 FP7/CIP and over 50 Horizon 2020 projects across a range of research themes, such as ICT, Smart Energy, Environment, Food, Biotechnology, Health, international cooperation of science, technology and innovation, Nanotechnologies, NMP and Space. SPI is also coordinator of the ENRICH in China Centre and partner in the ENRICH in Brazil an ENRICH in the USA consortiums.
SPI also works extensively with industry, assisting the structuring of R&D and Innovation activities and supporting connections with potential research partners and funding opportunities at an international level.
